How to check company mentions, find errors in sources, and choose next steps

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — work on visibility in generative search. This refers to answers from GPT, Alice AI, and other systems. Promoting a company on maps relates to local SEO; these tasks may overlap when working with directories.

The guide is useful if the business already has a website and proven experience, but the state of presence in AI responses is unclear: the company is rarely mentioned, services are confused, or outdated information is provided. Let's start by checking responses and sources, then move on to a work plan.

After reading, you will be able to set a promotion task, distinguish a mention from a link, and choose priority changes on the site and external platforms. There is a separate section for technical page auditing. guide on preparing the site for AI search.

Practical coverage of this guide:
3 metrics
We separate brand visibility, share of mentions, and share of answers with a link.
8 industries
Reference guide: information and sources for an industry audit

1. What is GEO in practice: three levels of brand presence

In control answers, it is useful to separately note three results:

  1. Brand Mention: the brand is named in the response. Additionally, we check the correctness of services, terms, and contacts.
  2. Positive recommendation (Brand Recommendation): for a comparative user query ("who to order website development from") the system includes the company in the list of options and provides arguments. We fix the wording and verify the facts used to explain the choice.
  3. Grounding Citation: the response shows a clickable link to a page on your site. Verify whether the source confirms the statement next to the link: citation itself does not yet prove the accuracy of the answer. We wrote in detail about the technical side in in the AI-search optimization guide.

How to turn a check into promotion: in AI SEO we implement changes on the site, in GEO we develop brand data, profiles, and expert materials. The STARCODE team manages these directions according to a general plan if the business needs both. Google considers GEO in the context of SEO.

Tutorial analysis: supplier has the wrong region listed

Hypothetical situation: a client asks about equipment suppliers, but in the AI response, the company shows an old service region. The link leads to an outdated profile. This is a demonstration example, not a client case.

  1. Save response: query, system, mode, date, and source. Clarify current regions and terms with the company.
  2. Check discrepancies: match site, profile, and cited publication. Note which materials can be updated independently.
  3. Draft tasks: fix available information, prepare a request for updating for external publication. Fix responsible persons and statuses.
  4. Repeat measurement: after updating sources, check the same queries. Separately show fixed information and changes in the AI responses themselves.

The first result of such work is a clear map of sources and actions. In a demonstration report fragment shows how to formalize observation, resolution, and repeat check.

2. How does a neural network learn about companies: training vs RAG

A mention in an organic response cannot be ordered as a guaranteed entry in a "ChatGPT database". To select tasks, it is useful to distinguish between information learned by the model and sources that the system retrieves for a specific response:

  • Static training sample (Pre-training Data): information learned during model training. The exact composition of data and the degree of knowledge about a specific company may be unknown. Long-term brand presence on the internet does not guarantee that the model knows it; the agency does not control memory update timelines.
  • Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) context: in search mode, the system can obtain relevant sources and use them in the answer. The search index, bot crawling, and user-initiated requests are different processes. One cannot assume that every answer means a new visit by a search bot to the site.

3. Entity Optimization: how to build a company's digital identity

Entity Optimization it is convenient to perceive this as verifying company details: names, services, contacts, specialists, and official profiles. It should be clear to the reader which business the information belongs to and where it can be verified.

We check information consistency in five areas:

  • Legal identity: uniform name of the legal entity, TIN (INN), PSRN (OGRN), correct indication of legal and actual addresses with an explanation of differences;
  • External profiles and registries: applicable map directories and industry registries; Wikidata — only upon compliance entity eligibility criteria, without a placement guarantee;
  • Linking with experts (E-E-A-T): verified profiles of key specialists (chief physicians, lead engineers, partners) with mention of publications, academic degrees, and presentations;
  • Semantic consistency: agreed-upon information about services and terms, taking into account region, date, and offer format;
  • Machine-readable markup: using schemas Organization with attributes sameAs, pointing to the official pages representing the same organization.

4. Eight industry scenarios: what information to check

Below is an illustrative memo for eight industries. Use it to compose questions and verify information. In a specific audit, the list of sources is formed based on saved answers and the company's specifics.

Industry / Segment What information is useful to verify Where to look for confirmation Examples of information gaps
1. Dentistry and medicine Clinics with verified licenses, open doctor profiles, and publications on health portals Roszdravnadzor registries, ProDoktorov, physician publications, moderated reviews Lack of doctors' names on the site, template texts without medical facts
2. B2B equipment Manufacturers and integrators with detailed equipment passports, implementation cases, and GOST standards Industry exhibitions, distributor catalogs, technical articles, Ministry of Industry and Trade registry No pricing calculation terms or exact technical specifications
3. IT and custom development Agencies with open case studies, tech stack descriptions, profiles on Habr, and industry rankings Rating Runeta, Habr, VC.ru, GitHub repositories, specialized media Case studies without a clear task, approach, and confirmation of results
4. Legal services Colleges and bureaus with mentions of specific arbitration cases, court victories, and media commentary Registry of arbitration cases, Pravo.ru, RBC, Kommersant, industry publications Promises of a "100% victory guarantee", lack of public lawyer practice
5. Construction and renovation Companies with SRO membership, detailed estimates, video recording of stages, and legal guarantees SRO registries, Yandex Maps, independent construction forums, video hosting sites Hundreds of identical fake reviews without contract details
6. Business-class real estate Agencies and brokers with public market analytics, service terms, and expert materials CIAN, ERZ.RF, business media, industry analytical reports Template-based ad parsing without original added analytics
7. Logistics and foreign trade Logistics companies with descriptions of routes, calculation terms, and examples of completed tasks Industry registries, industry portals, and the company's primary materials Irrelevant routes, lack of information on risks and certification
8. Corporate training Platforms and coaches with original programs, published research, and verified reviews EdTech ratings, alumni reviews on independent platforms, author books Lack of a transparent program and verified graduate results

5. Why are competitors recommended, but not you?

A universal reason for a brand's absence in an answer cannot be established. For diagnosis, we test at least three hypotheses, then compare them with actual answers and sources:

  • Lack of external information: few available materials that allow for verifying the company's claims. We study applicable independent publications and profiles without assuming a universal ranking rule.
  • Conflicting or outdated data: we check whether directories and publications have outdated contacts, an incorrect legal entity, or terms without a date. We correct confirmed errors in accessible sources.
  • Lack of evidence base: general statements about leadership are difficult to verify. It is more useful to disclose project conditions, source data, results, and their limitations — with the client's permission and supporting materials.

6. Seven practical ways to improve a brand's GEO-visibility

The work plan combines content to be verified, agreed-upon profiles, and repeat measurements:

  1. Publication of original industry research: publish initial measurements only with methodology, date, sample, and limitations. Such material helps the reader verify conclusions and evaluate the author's experience.
  2. Expert columns by speakers in specialized media: publish materials indicating the author, experience, and supporting sources. Choose platforms based on audience and editorial requirements, save links to published materials.
  3. Formatting case studies with verifiable figures: move away from abstract project descriptions. Show the original task, limitations, approach, and confirmed result. If confidentiality agreements are in effect, coordinate an anonymized publication. Financial metrics and client testimonials should be added when they can be verified and disclosed.
  4. Synchronization of profiles in authoritative catalogs: unified data in Yandex Maps, 2GIS, industry classifiers, professional associations, and SRO/license registries.
  5. Reputation management on verified review platforms: work with real reviews and verifiable facts. The sentiment of control answers can be evaluated separately, while keeping evaluation rules and initial answers.
  6. Implementation of extended Schema.org markup: use applicable markup, and sameAs — for pages that uniquely represent the same organization. Do not turn it into a list of any and all publications about the company.
  7. Regular response check: repeat agreed queries and save the answers, then verify the statements against company documents and original sources. API and user interface can give different results; record the measurement method and update the available sources.

7. GEO metrics: how to control presence in AI

Below are the definitions of STARCODE control sample metrics. We show official platform indicators separately: for example, SoV in Yandex Webmaster is calculated by Yandex methodology.

  • Brand Visibility (%): number of valid answers with a brand mention / total number of valid answers × 100. Query repeats are considered separate observations.
  • AI Share of Voice (%): number of "response — your brand" pairs / number of "response — brand" pairs for the entire agreed brand list, including your brand, × 100. Each brand is counted once per response. If there are no mentions in the denominator, the result is "no data" rather than 0%.
  • Citation Rate (%): number of valid responses with at least one link to an agreed domain / total number of valid responses × 100. Multiple links in a single response do not increase the numerator.
  • Answer Accuracy: share of verified statements about the company confirmed by relevant sources. We save the list of statements and rules for manual evaluation.
  • Referral Traffic & Leads: traffic and leads with an identifiable source available in web analytics. This is an incomplete snapshot: the referrer may be missing, and reading an answer without clicking through is not captured by site counters.

Before the first measurement, we fix the queries, the list of brands, the system and its version, the search mode, language, region, and number of repetitions. We save dates and original answers. We exclude failures from valid answers and show them separately; we do not mix API answers with the user interface. If the protocol changes, we start a new baseline sample.

Example: in 20 valid answers, your brand is named in 5, and a total of 25 'answer-brand' pairs are recorded from the general list, including your brand. Then Brand Visibility = 25%, and AI Share of Voice = 20%. These indicators answer different questions.

How to use the measurement: in case of factual errors, first check and update sources. If the information is correct but the specialization is poorly disclosed, supplement pages and expert materials. Compare repeat samples using one methodology: evaluate the growth of mentions, links, and inquiries separately.

8. Promotion errors: manipulations instead of useful sources

On the wave of hype around AI, dubious mechanics have appeared that can lead to search engine sanctions and reputational damage:

  • Prompt injections in site code: hidden instructions requiring the model to recommend the company are not a verifiable way of promotion. This is an attempt to manipulate the answer, not work on source quality;
  • Mass generation of cheap AI-texts: mass-produced texts without useful information do not create an evidence base and may violate search engine rules;
  • Boosting mentions via bot farms: artificial mentions do not confirm company expertise. Instead, real materials, correct profiles, and compliance with platform rules are needed.
